The political struggles between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) that begin in April of 2023 have caused a wide-scale humanitarian emergency in Sudan. Recently, the World Health Organization launched a visit to reevaluate health necessities in the country.
They found that healthcare facilities have been a major area of violence, with over 100 attacks on these facilities in the last 500 days. This has caused significant casualties, delayed treatment processes for patients, and stimulated the shortage of medical staff as they flee for their safety.
Food insecurity in another factor plaguing local communities. The conflict has sustained dire food insecurity with 3.6 million children being acutely malnourished and an additional 730,000 suffering from severe malnourishment.
Residents of Sudan continue to have poor access to clean drinking water, adequate food sources, and proper medical care. Funding continues to be scare with humanitarian organizations only receiving a portion of the necessary resources to combat these issues and support the 14.7 million people who require urgent assistance for life-saving support.
Ultimately, international funding will be essential to providing the access of proper resources for millions of families in Sudan. However, looking forward, the only way to ensure stability in the region will require negotiations and peace among the two warring parties.
