With the U.S. presidential election on the horizon, it has been made clear that a new administration will set the stage for global changes to be made in healthcare. We can only hope that the policies harbored by the victor party will result in change for the better.
The democratic candidate, Kamala Harris, emphasizes her priority on utilizing U.S. leadership to mitigate the spread of pandemics and bug resistance against antimicrobial disease.
This stands in drastic contrast to Donald Trump’s isolationist intentions, where he stresses the importance of autonomy and lessened federal policy action among global parties during an outbreak. This can be seen in his prior disbanding of the pandemic unit within the U.S. government in 2018. He also explained his plans to remove the Office of Pandemic Preparedness and Response Policy established by President Biden in 2023.
Notably, Trump also pulled out of the Paris Climate Agreement and began the United States removal out of the World Health Organization during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. Although this action was reversed during Biden’s administration, it displays the serious intentions of Trump’s future policies concerning global health.
In any case, international citizens should expect pandemic policies to change as a result of the new administration, with an increased or decreased foreign involvement on the horizon. For Americans, it is essential they exercise their civic duty and do their research when casting their ballot in the 2024 election.
