Humans are always being constantly warned about the possibility of various food-borne illnesses. But what about our furry friends? It turns out they, too, can contract infectious strains of Salmonella. However, scientists at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Center for Veterinary Medicine (CVM) have created a new way to test for Salmonella in animal food. It’s imperative to test for bacterias like these to keep vulnerable animals, such as our pets, safe from risky infections hidden in animal food.
In previous years, the presence of Salmonella was detected through a work-intensive and lengthy process, with this method often taking several days to fully detect any bacteria growth in food samples. However, the newly innovative method of testing for Salmonella in food samples can quicken up that process with great accuracy. This new method involves testing for a unique DNA sequence known as Salmonella invasion gene invA. This method involves a technique called loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP), which can swiftly create reliable copies of the invA gene which indicates the presence of Salmonella in food. Accurate testing can be conducted with this method using a small battery-powered tool. Although it can seem deceiving, the smaller size does not sacrifice its performance.
The immense dedication and determination to develop the LAMP method for detecting Salmonella in animal food has certainly paid off. After extensive testing and verification from various FDA laboratories across the U.S., it has been proven that different people using the LAMP method across different laboratories have received consistent results, leading it to be accepted into the FDA’s Bacteriological Analytical Manual. This method has specifically been useful in indicating the truthful detection of Salmonella in various animal foods such as dry dog food, cattle feed, and poultry feed.
Since its creation, the LAMP method has been quickly gaining popularity across many state laboratories because of its ability to rapidly perform accurate tests in a simple manner. Examples of these laboratories include NARMS, a retail meat laboratory. The FDA concludes that more than 20 NARMS laboratories have started using this method of testing in 2022.
