Alarms are a tool people typically use to wake up at a certain time of the day. Although alarms have many other uses, such as reminding them to do a task or attend a meeting, the most common use of them is for sleep. Using an alarm to wake up is different from a simple reminder to do a task. The sound of an alarm going off can catch someone off guard, regardless of what they are doing. It can be while working on a project, playing an instrument, or even just doing nothing at all. Out of all these things, the shock is the greatest when the purpose is to get out of an unconscious rest.
One thing that is certain is that loud alarm sounds are not good for health. Not only is a loud alarm sound bad, but loud sounds in general are bad. It has negative effects on ear drums, raises blood sugar, and increases heart rate. If jolting out of sleep to this sound is added on top of this stress response, there are more negative effects, such as fatigue, moodiness, and disrupted circadian rhythms. Not only are people being set up for long term negative effects on their health, but they are also setting a stressful tone to start the day.
When used properly, alarms can actually contribute to a better quality of sleep. If the alarm is set at a consistent time, it can help reduce the chance of sleep fragmentation. Sleep fragmentation is the process by which a person wakes up in the middle of their sleep. This disrupts the circadian rhythm of the person. It is also important to wake up at a certain time using an alarm in order to establish a healthy sleeping pattern. As long as the alarm is set to wake the person up at a certain time corresponding to the sleep pattern, it is effective.
In order to prevent any issues with using alarms, there are some conditions to follow. First, the alarm shouldn’t be loud. Louder noises can increase stress. Instead, using softer noises or noises that gradually get louder is a better choice. Second, they should go off at a regular time. If they go off at a random time, it raises the likelihood of waking up in the middle of a deep sleep. Although sleeping without alarms is good, sleeping with alarms reduces the chance of oversleeping. People should use alarms to develop a regular sleeping pattern.
